Many smoke alarms have a service life of around 10 years and should be replaced once they reach the end of their manufacturer’s recommended lifespan.

Queensland Smoke Alarm Requirements
More Info
Queensland has some of Australia’s most comprehensive smoke alarm laws, with all owner- occupied homes required to comply by 1 January 2027.
The legislation requires smoke alarms to be:
- Photoelectric smoke alarms
- Interconnected so all alarms sound together
- Installed in every bedroom
- Installed in hallways connecting bedrooms
- Installed on every level of the home
- Compliant with Australian Standard AS 3786:2014
Homes being sold or leased have already been required to meet these standards for several years, and from 1 January 2027 the requirements will extend to all existing owner-occupied dwellings.
If you’re unsure whether your home complies, we can inspect your property and provide clear advice on any upgrades required.
